5 Easy Steps for a cleaner Dehumidifier

cleaner dehumidifier

Having a cleaner dehumidifier keeps moisture levels in check. If it isn’t maintained, you risk having mold and mildew build up over time.

Dehumidifiers keep your home healthy and germ-free, but it’s no surprise that bacteria, dust, and dirt can accumulate inside it. If you leave it unclean, you not only lose a valuable tool for keeping your home comfortable, but you also risk causing mildew and mold to spread.

Luckily, making sure that your dehumidifier is clean like the rest of your home is easy. You just need to follow the right steps:

Wear serious protection

Cleaning your dehumidifier doesn’t mean forgetting a few basic safety measures.

When cleaning anything that may have accumulated dust and mold, consider wearing a pair of gloves and a mask. Making sure you’re properly protected against these contaminants is the first step towards a cleaner dehumidifier.

Clean exterior surfaces first

Wipe the exterior of your dehumidifier using a damp cloth dipped in warm water and dish soap. This should get rid of the dirt and grime on the surface. Remember NOT to spray water directly on this appliance. This will only damage your dehumidifier and force you to buy a new one.

Drain and wash the tank

Remove the tank from the dehumidifier and drain the water that remains. Wash the tank with warm, soapy water and set it aside. Let it dry before you proceed to the other components.

Keep the coils defrosted

After unplugging your dehumidifier, check the back to see if the coils have frozen. If they have, leave it for a while to defrost. Try leaving it somewhere where you can catch the water. You can let it defrost outside or leave a bucket underneath.

Rewash and replace the filters

Air filters can still catch dust or cobwebs which could keep the appliance from working properly.

When cleaning this part of your dehumidifier, take special care not to damage the fans when rinsing it with cold water and soap. Don’t forget to dry these off afterward before reassembling.

Having a cleaner dehumidifier keeps your home’s moisture levels in check and maintains a healthy, comfortable environment for you and your family.
